The word “suzan” is Persian which means needle thus “suzani” is for needlework. It gained its name owing to thousands of hours spent by women – artisans of suzani – creating these beautiful and unique pieces of art produced and applied at home as wall hangings, tablecloths and prayer mats. The patterns usually feature traditional motifs of nature such as sun, moon, gardens of flowers, vines, leaves with some birds, animals and fish creating a warm and lovely atmosphere. Hand-woven cotton fabric is used basically for the foundation of suzani while the threads for embroidery are silk. Traditionally the home to Uzbek suzanis are Samarkand and Bukhara- two most ancient cities of Uzbekistan.
